The Bougainville campaign was a series of land and naval battles during the Pacific campaign of World War II. N amed after the island of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands and p art of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the Allied grand strategy in the South Pacific, the campaign was f ought in two phases and lasted from November 1944 until the Japanese surrender on August 21, 1945 . By that time, it was almost exclusively Australian forces that were fighting the Japanese, and many were lost in battles that ultimately had little effect on the outcome of the war. I say this as a Millennial myself, but we’re losing something precious as a country (and world) as these fine gentlemen shuffle off this mortal coil.
Cheers from the US to our Australian cousins, who get far less credit in this country for their assistance in the Pacific Theater than they deserve.

Somehow, I started getting daily emails from Quora, and most of them are about WWII or LOTR, which pretty much nails my interests. But the other day, somebody asked, “How much did the British contribute to WWII?” There are definitely many people in the US who believe that America was the only country that defeated the Axis in WWII.

Back when Combat Flight Sim 2 came out in 2000, flight sim was my major hobby. Cfs2, unlike the Battle of Britain focused cfs1, centred its narrative around the war in the Pacific and the Solomon Islands. I spent many many hours flying in and out of Bougainville, reenacting missions of the VF squadrons of the time.

Russia is definitely under-appreciated in that regard. I’m not sure who ultimately suffered more from the war: Germany or Russia.

If you haven’t seen it, watch this:

Probably Russia, though how much of that resulted from actual fighting and how much from their own poor planning and deliberate actions is a matter of debate.

That one boggles the mind. There was just a damn movie about Dunkirk made not too long ago! The Battle of Britain is a legendary tale of perseverance and bravery in the face of a seemingly insurmountable foe.

But the British “lost” at Dunkirk. Nobody was winning until the Americans got involved on D-Day.

Rather ironic - I’m listening to the Dunkirk soundtrack as I read this...

soviet union by far. the problem in 41, 42 and 43 is trying to seperate, which cause, lack of preperation, inexperience of troops, lack of supplies/fuel/ammo, or poor tactical de cs ions.
Also out of that 10 mil, 3million were starved to death in nazi pow camps.
the SU was also evil in thier treatment of pows with at a minimum hundreds of thousands wehrmact dying during and after the war.

I don’t know a whole lot about him, but I suspect he was at least as worried about his legacy as he was about beating the Japanese.

Pretty much. And he probably could have flown in, but he chose to be dramatic and get his feet wet. Then again, maybe the boat was safer.
